Northumberland is a region of great antiquity, and boasts remains of ancient occupation dating back to the stone age. In the Simonside Hills (overlooking nearby Rothbury) there are examples of ancient and mysterious prehistoric rock art known as, "Cup & Ring" marks. The Romans too left their mark - Most famously at the World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall. However there are a multitude of less well known Roman sites such as Chew Green, located a little further up the Coquet Valley.
The cottage complex of Low Alwinton lies along the banks of the River Coquet - famous for Such an unspoiled landscape provides a haven for wildlife. Black Grouse can be heard over the hills in early Spring, and even the rare Osprey is a known summer visitor. Otters now are no longer a rarity along the length of the River Coquet and a glimpse of one of these elusive creatures can remain with you a lifetime. And if all that peace & quiet gets to much - You are only a short drive away from thriving market towns, such as Alnwick and Morpeth. For the die-hard shoppaholic, Newcastle upon Tyne offers fantastic shops and world famous nightlife. We look forward to welcoming you to our special region very soon. |
